Our lab has joined hands with Centre for Health and Disease studies (CHDS) to develop cutting-edge genomic facility in Nepal. With the installation of Oxford Nanopore portable genome sequencer , we will now be able to perform enhanced real time genomic surveillance of emerging diseases as well as evolutionary studies of biodiversity in Nepal.
CHDS-Nepal is research based non-profit organization working in different aspects of studies impacting public health, diseases, environment and animals in Nepal. CHDS has been working in collaboration with different other national and international institutions, academic institutions as well as department of health services, veterinary and livestocks for research activities involving surveillances, training, community awareness as well as laboratory-based studies using state of art tools.
Currently, after the declaration of WHO a Public health emergency of international concern for COVID-19, CHDS-Nepal has been leading discussion with the Government of Nepal and has been working closely with the department of health services, Nepal and other stakeholders to detect, combat, control and contain all possible spread of the SARS-COV-19. Nepal constitutes a high-risk country due to the influx of the high number travelers from all over the country and a very close border with China and India.
The Government of Nepal has planned to conduct highly enhanced real time base surveillances and prepare all necessary action plans for early preparedness and responses. We believe that this sequencing facility will provide additional benefit to the genomic surveillances that is underway to strengthen disease surveillances, and diagnostics in Nepal
